Jumpin’ jazz house tracks from Jimmy Allen on the appropriately titled The Get Down EP on Circus Recordings. On the title track, Allen drops a stomping groove over the splinters of a fibrillating jazz jam — hot brass, lively piano and a hype man buzzing like Drew Bundini Brown pushing your face in it. These are well-travelled paths, but it’s worth pointing out when they’re done right, and especially when it’s a fucking heart attack. “The Get Down” is a fucking heart attack.
“Til The Morning” takes the b-side spot into a different space — more jazz cafe than juke joint, more basement lounge than main floor. Tracks like these had a special place in Chicago from around the late ’90s until the mid-’00s, from some of the more popular compilations put together in the last days of Guidance Recordings to some of the sophisticated-sounding sets of DJs like Diz. One record won’t make a revival but there’s not enough of these nutrients in our bloodstream these days and Allen is exceptional at manufacturing them.
