UKG Revival: Obstacle Gets Lively with Moodswing’s Outbreak

Three records in and Obstacle has shown the chops to be maybe the best UK Garage label in the business now.

Three records in and Obstacle has shown the chops to be maybe the best UK Garage label in the business now. They’re all vinyl, and with a sound that is really unique. This isn’t a rehash but a resuscitation and what you find here will go way beyond the rote beats and tropes that you find in all too many “Garage House” or modern day UKG recordings. It’s the real fucking deal, friends – a little dangerous and a whole lot of fun to play.

Moodswing is, according to Discogs anyway, a production alias of DJ Perception. If you heard his Isla EP earlier this year you don’t need an introduction and Outbreak is a better one anyway. “Secret Mood” is the secret weapon here – the B-side track sounds like Ron Trent if he grew up in Shepherd’s Bush or some such and does a better job at bringing an authentically soulful deep house vibe to UKG than anything other recent release I can think of. All four tracks are special and the record sounds amazing – Moodswing shows remarkable adeptness at producing with an airy but dynamic style. I am so into this record and from the sounds of it Obstacle has establishing a cult following just three records in. Don’t ask why, just buy in.
