A world which sees a lasting collaboration and relationship between Nona Hendryx and Soul Clap is one I want to live in. Keep Funkin’ should cement this relationship between the icon of soulful funk and this decade’s tireless evangelists of funky soul.
This is not a showcase, it’s a full five track EP, it’s the real deal, it’s Nona in full throated glory on “I Feel Joy (Feel the Spirit).” “Ooo, Ooo, Ooo” is a detour through a world where Prince, Cameo and Don Was drew the background in thick strokes. Close your eyes and in places the vocal sounds so much like Prince you will flip out, and so will other DJs who think you’ve got a line to the legendary Paisley Park undiscovered stash.
Who’s making tracks like “Keep Funkin for the World” today? It’s pretty hip to fuck around with disco and you’ll never find a critic who doesn’t love some raw ’80s style Italo proto-house but who is making this music that sounds like the lost collaboration of Chaka Khan and Chico DeBarge? None but Nona. She soars into the azimuth on “Scream (Like You Want It),” a track that manages to sound more like ’80s funk than even some ’80s funk. Beautiful stuff from a beautiful soul.
