Spincycle are UK producers Dave Clements and Andy Davies, who put out a small but perfectly formed catalog of pristinely programmed, highly danceable tech house in the early 2000s, records that are still entirely playable today. This three tracker is the debut release on their new label Coin-Op. The title track “Imperfect Storm” is in that classic early 2000s UKTH style, you know the one — bass heavy, abstract, funky via layers of, in the case of Spincycle, genuinely well-programmed percussion, with a rolling and driving rather than building and peaking feel, and with just the merest hint of subtle euphoria bubbling away below the surface without ever being explicitly stated: that kind of vibe.
“Fundamental” is on a similar tip but is more synthy, with lots of interlocking arpeggios, pulsing synth lines and big chord stabs before they introduce some fat, shiny acid squelches and way more chords than you’d expect in a tech houser. Final tune “Oceans On Saturn” is a short but sweet, chunky mid-tempo electro-funk jam which again features trademark Spincycle in-the-pocket programming. Great start for a new label.
