Detroit is like a science fiction trilogy with a vast and sprawling cast of characters. They slip through your fingers and slip your mind only to come back in an out-of-nowhere story arc, right when it matters most. Guys like Terrence Dixon, Shake Shakir, Santonio and Norm Talley may fall in or out of focus but never out of fashion, and regardless of where the spotlight lands, these are guys you can build a movement around (and that is to some degree what Dixon is doing with his Minimal Detroit platform).
The same can also be said for Italy, which has even more “unsung” heroes of electronic music than maybe even Detroit. Fitting then to see both Italian veteran M.R.E.U.X. and Terrence Dixon together on Space Station, a new four track split EP on the former’s Blumoog Music. Dixon has Side A with the space ghetto jazz of “Resonator” and the synthesized carburetor drag of “Space Vision.” There’s a symmetry here as both of M.R.E.U.X.’s tracks seem to fit the same tone as Dixon’s. The tribal push and pull of M.R.E.U.X.’s “Black Home” is almost like an answer to “Resonator,” with M.R.E.U.X.’s “Shabo” sharing some ancient skein of DNA fibers with the muffled frenzy of “Space Vision.”
