“Stop looking back for something you left behind,” reads the A side of the latest Sound Signature jam. “The future holds the thing that you need to find.”

This is the upbeat message of the lyrics for “What You Gonna Ask For,” an all-star recording featuring Theo Parrish, Lori, Silentjay, Simon Marvin, Perrin Moss and Paul Bender (the latter three members of Hiatus Kaiyote). Some records are a good time, but this one sounds like they had a blast making it. Parrish keeps the percussion inside the lines, building a foundation for the florid and untamed piano, brass and vocal stylings of the ensemble crew.

The flip features broken beat legend Dego on the remix, and it sounds like he had an even better time remixing this one, picking out pieces of music like fragments of a broken mirror and then lying them out in front of him to make his selection. The original is a vault bursting with textures, tones and short passages that Dego polishes up, files down and sets in the mortar like sapphires.

“What You Gonna Ask For” exudes a tremendous warmth – you can almost warm your hands to it. It’s not fair how easy Theo makes this.
