Already well-known on the New York scene, and I’m guessing soon to be well-known globally too, Toribio turns in his debut release on Chromeo and A-Trak’s “Juliet” imprint, and it’s a hot one.

Daylight” features tough, dry drums, that border on jacking (think Chuck Daniels), alongside heavy percussion and sparse, jazz-tinged instrumentation. This raw, early ’90s vibe is completely juxtaposed with a crystal-clear assured, classic soulful vocal performance from Toribio’s real-life sister Sharin, an artist I was able to find zero information about online, but who truly shines here. The backing vocals are crisp and tight, recorded and arranged to perfection, and I’m struggling to think of the last time (if ever) I’ve ever heard such pristine, crisp vocals over such rough and tough, almost lo-fi beats. And the mad thing is, it really works.

Bristol’s man-of-the-moment Crackazat delivers a typically jazzy and excellent remix here, and Toribio also supplies a cool, somewhat deconstructed, off-kilter and much looser “Alternate Mix,” which also merits your time. But for me there’s some magical about the original. It’s very rare to hear anything even approaching an original sound in house music these days, despite what us publicists might tell you. But Toribio might be onto something here. By jove, I think he just might be…
