Super high quality package from Bradley Zero’s Rhythm Section label featuring four tracks from Brooklyn duo musclecars with Toribio and Roland Clark on vocals, all of which are at the organic, jazz-ish end of the house spectrum.

“Agua De Florida” starts out with a crisp house beat, chunky Moog-ish b-line and a long Rhodes chord progression, over which a trumpet mournfully solos. Combining jazz and house is fraught with beige dangers and dull or worthy perils, but luckily this stays just out of trouble, the keys player upping the intensity over the course of the track which unfolds into a fiery seven and half minute house jazz jam with a neat little synth laden breakdown.

“Be Honest” is a sparse, low tempo soul track featuring vocals from Toribo that’s smooth and yearning but in the context of this review, not really a dancefloor track. “What’s My Story” featuring Roland Clark comes in a main mix and a dub, both of which are fire, and from a DJing point of view, work together really well. The main mix is a broken beat jazz dancer, drenched in church-y organ over which Clarke does his soulful thing to great effect. The dub, and I hate to be predictable, but perhaps my fave off the EP, plays up the bruk drums, uses little snippets of the main vocal, and cooks things up into a highly percussive, dark-jazz storm. Distinct and high quality EP.
