Missed among all of the tumult of the last few weeks: Bryan Jones and Hugh Cleal of Detroit duo Golf Clap and Country Club Disco are splitting up, with Cleal to continue using both brands.
“After nearly 10 years together as Golf Clap, Bryan Jones and myself (Hugh Cleal) are parting ways,” a statement posted on Facebook and Instagram stated. “Creativity is what brought us together, and it is that same creativity that will keep us going long after this fork in the road.”
Bryan Jones will be working under a new alias, according to Cleal.
Ryan Middleton at Magnetic was the first to publish about the news.
Jones and Cleal previous collaborated on Cleal’s label Coyote Cuts back in the previous decade. “In early 2012 I played a couple of shows in Detroit for Hugh and quickly felt more at home in Detroit than I did anywhere else,” Jones told 5 Mag’s Czarina Mirani in a 2013 interview. “We picked our name out in late January 2013 and put our first song out as Golf Clap in March of this year with the Grant Nelson remix.”
5 Mag also wrote about Golf Clap’s residency at the Grasshopper Underground in Ferndale, Michigan. Their old school mix is among the most popular we’ve published in the last few years:
