Tom Flynn House of EFUNK album artwork

No matter what we say and no matter what we’re forced to do I think there are a few kinds of records that are just meant to be pressed to vinyl. Anything built around a funky Hammond B3 organ solo is on that list and that means Tom Flynn’s “Fifty Ways” is on that list too. The House of Efunk vinyl exclusive is the label’s third overall release and it’s scorching. “Fifty Ways” is nearly 7 minutes of Memphis hi fi funk with a thumpin’ bass filling out a big fat bottom. Shigeto does a remix that you wouldn’t think work but does by pushing the pitch control way, way up and adding a hectic urgency to fragmented notes and decomposing basslines. B-side tracks “Catching Stars” and “Touché” bring a vintage, almost retrowave vibe in contrast to what’s otherwise a sweaty and soulful affair.
