Just three years after opening, Chicago live music venue the Salt Shed is considering expanding into a large neighboring property with an eye toward hosting larger events and future festivals.
Blue Star Properties is “under contract” to buy a vacant property located at 1401 N. Magnolia Street in Chicago’s Goose Island neighborhood. The 5 acre property straddles the Chicago River between Blackhawk and Le Moyne streets and would create an “open-air venue that could accommodate not only larger concerts that than the Salt Shed can handle with its roughly 5,500-person limit for outdoor shows, but potentially serve as a destination for neighborhood street festivals and annual music festivals that increasingly run into issues with logistics and costs,” according to Crain’s:
The project is still under review with Blue Star’s Golden reiterating that the expansion is not a “go” yet. Golden estimates that the expansion would be “a $60 to $70 million project,” he told Crain’s.
Earlier this month, Salt Shed owners 16″ on Center (described as a “sister company” to Blue Star by Crain’s) announced the closure of The Promontory; the Hyde Park live music venue will continue to hold events through New Year’s Eve before closing their doors permanently.
