When people drop out of this scene, they really disappear. “WEHT” pieces are always popular in magazines, though I loathe the prospect of writing one for fear of finding out all those amazing artists of the past are in jail, gone mad or dead.
BRS, or British Rhythm Services, are happily free, sane (I guess) and alive and featured on an exhilarating new EP, Situation, from Pressed For Time. Last seen by me with a couple of records on Andy Compton‘s Peng, BRS have been churning out quality music since shortly after their formation in the late 1990s on labels including Cyclo and 2020 Vision, but none is as fine as “You Know Why.” This is the lead track on their Situation EP and it is golden: deep, as in Kerri Chandler, and playful, as in Spencer Kincy.
“Out of Reach” is a rework of a track that appeared on their Peng album Taste It, and those gentle chords and tight percussion evokes something like Aphex Twin or another IDM savant. “Muzik Electronica” closes with an Afro-Brazilian jam session, with spacey chords and steel hats. Overall a superb record, out in October on black wax.
