Brilliant (in the sense of bright), sensual and deeply nourishing diesel for the soul from Earthly Measures. Released on their self-titled label, Down, Sun is a four track EP of complex but very accessible music with a global flair and tribal spirit. Down, Sun is music for midnight forests, cold blue deserts and seekers of visions going to and fro on the earth, and walking up and down on it.
There are four songs on Down, Sun but it feels like an album. These are epic in scope if not length; Earthly Measures’ music compresses nights of blindness and seasons of reverie into mere minutes on tape. “Keep The Light” featuring Playroots could be one of those Brian Eno records that steal time from waking life. Chants and songs and the rhythms of an unknown people surround a heartbreaking melody on “only if it’s with you,” and you can really feel it. There’s an organic unity to these tracks, layered like a Lee “Scratch” Perry master with music recorded over and over on hot tape until the sounds consume each other and make new sounds altogether. Acid lines sometimes seem to dance in unison with hands hitting drums. If I could find a radio station that played this 24 hours a day I would break the knob off.
