I love this label enough to stab a mf for it. Kalahari Oyster Cult delivers quality leftfield and occult electronic jams at twice the pace of anyone else and they make discovery so effortless. Michelle (just Michelle) is a producer from Uruguay, “rooted in that Montevideo warehouse sound.” And you’re in Chicago — what does that mean to you? It means 33 rpms in heavy rotation and I was riveted for all of them.
Unfailing Love is the sound of the future colliding with the past, metal and plastic and unknown materials twisting and bending until you can’t fathom the original shape. “More Sexy Than Me” is a shout-out to the classic era rave anthems from bands like The Prodigy — a rumbling bass poured over breakbeats, ion cannons and a pagan groove. “Is It Me?” is a steely electro-edged jam with a vocal cut out of a John Carpenter dream sequence. The trilling, ululating “Non Notes” is the most flexible track here for DJs — something to set the floor for a set and prepare to pivot. “Open The Door” is a gummy stomp of buzzy bass music and an unmistakable sample from a metal record that just works so well you have to wonder why nobody had thought to jack this one before. Kalahari Oyster Cult records almost always take you on a journey, and the best ones take you to where you never knew you wanted to go.
