Scissor & Thread drops two highly coveted vinyl-only reissues on one 12 inch, highlighting two DJ Sprinkles-related tracks from the mid-2010s.

DJ Sprinkles’ remix of “You Can Always Leave” appeared on the B-side of the 2013 Francis Harris release and, at least as I remember it, caused the most tranquil earthquake you can imagine. A new generation of deep house was animating DJs around the world at that time, and the sound of this remix became something like “the sound of 2013,” at least in this niche. It had incredible depth, and a staying power like few of its contemporaries. It was inimitable, or nearly so — offhand I can think of fewer than ten other tracks that use steel drums in the same context, and none of them are outright copycats. Surely they tried, they sampled, but found it lacking. There is an underlying magic to this track, and magic is easily perceptible but utterly inscrutable.

A year later, Harris and Anthony Collins released the You Go Girl album as Frank & Tony. They also released three EPs with material from the record and an additional track, titled You, Go and, of course, Girl. “Companion” was released on You, officially credited to “Frank & Tony with DJ Sprinkles.” You fetches insanely high prices on the second-hand market, and this track is a large part of the reason why: nearly 13 minutes of beautiful, luscious but embraceable deep house, a bass like a human pulse and a very human voice crying out from deep in the mix. It’s as lovely as you remember twelve years on.
