Three rough and raw jack tracks that leap out of the speakers and bat your temporal lobe around a bit. Funk System is the latest EP from Black Girl / White Girl, the Amsterdam duo that smother a broadly techno-centered sound with gritty but club-ready grooves. It’s hard, it’s vital, it’s dope as fuck — the type of music that has a foot in the tradition and another stepping forward.
“Shadowboxer” leads with glitchy little groove matched with a big vocal hit that is hard to escape. Like an afterimage, you still see it long after you look away — it sticks with you, gets under your skin. “Fluid Self” is the most DJ-tool-y track here, and it’s easy to see how to work with it because it perfectly sets up the next track on the EP, “Brainwave.” And “Brainwave” is the tour de force of the record, driving tracks with an Orwellian vocal that seems to be showing entirely too much interest in your state of relaxation and noting your growing anxiety with a sinister laugh. These tracks are hot to the touch.
