Mira Ló is one of the most interesting producers working today. Her records stretch underground house music to the limits of its naturally-derived fault lines, charged with an incredible array of emotions and sensations without losing sight of its essential nature as a music of MOVEMENT. On The Way We Glowed, Mira Ló stirs up the embers of a past relationship, in music that suggests nostalgia, regret, longing — the whole ultraviolet spectrum of warm memories and crushing anxiety attacks you pass through when you wonder if there’s something left of love.
“Rose Quartz” is a sugary-sounding track with a dark undertone. I was blown away: this is likely the best track I’ve heard from Mira Ló, with an emotional intensity that you don’t listen to so much as experience. The music and lyrics intentionally work against each other in places; on “Give It To You” an uptempo, poppy tone makes the vocal’s repeated pleas of desperate obsession flip between cute and deranged. The rubbery, shuffling “Never Be Defeated” leaps out of the speakers with a manic energy. “How Does It Feel” provides a kind of catharsis — a sense of letting go and cutting free (and maybe dancing on graves).
You can of course listen to these independently and play them in DJ sets without any consideration for this. But as an EP, it coheres, it holds together.
