“A Night in Chicago” is the centerpiece and the best track on Mira Ló’s five track Tribute to Chicago EP. Someday someone is going to make a mix of tracks about Chicago from people who are not from Chicago but love Chicago, and “A Night in Chicago” will have a prominent place on it, maybe mixed into or out of Demuir’s “Ode to Chicago.”
The EP is broadly inspired by a winter trip to the city; the sound reflects someone who knows their history pretty fucking well and probably better than many of the locals. There’s a unique flair to Mira Ló’s sound — akin to the icy funk of early Chicago house as heard on JM Silk and some of Jamie Principle’s records, tracks that were made in the shadow of the great disco bands, under the influence of the sleek funk of new wave and the architects of the early ’80s boogie sound. “Life Is Sweet” is a driving homage to this sound, souped up with some CVO/Glenn Underground percussion and chords that soar like blue and white roman candles. “This Must Be The Place” is not a cover of the Talking Heads song but feels like it’s a wink to David Byrne’s refrain: home.
