Ed Nine here, with a record that could have been cut out of the classic Relief catalog. Ed Nine makes music for DJs — he makes records that make people move, plain and simple, and it’s the hardest thing an electronic music producer can do.
“H2O” is a gorgeous slab of deep house from the Chicago producer, starting off strong with slammin’ percussion and getting stronger as it goes on, with quick orchestra hits, a wobbly bassline and even more wobbly keys. And then the vocal, dreamy, floating above it all.
It’s non-stop. You know those EPs that have a great track and some good ones? We should stop buying those, because Ed Nine is out here packing 24 minutes of heat on wax. All four tracks here can be — should be — played. “The Boundary” is strong enough to anchor any EP on its own, with those crazy, moody chords and gorgeous leads. “The Rhythm” sounds like it came out of the same session, with largely the same kit, but featuring a turn on the keys that is ferocious fuel for the dancefloor.
For my money Ed Nine is making the best records to come out of Chicago right now, in the Chicago tradition, and this is one of them.
