Stefano Pulga’s great Italo studio project and sometimes a fake live band Kano had a song called “Dance School” that I always loved and thought would make for a dope boogie revival.
This is not that. “Kano’s Dance” is the lead single from the Unity EP from Lavan, whose UKG-inflected house sound we’ve covered here before. The Unity EP is another big bag of underground goodies, an EP characterized by jacking percussion ramping up to blissful peaks and valleys.
“Manpaintinghouse” is featured on “Kano’s Dance” and I think it must be his voice lamenting that “people don’t dance anymore.” Lavan seems to take this as a challenge, and makes one of the most bangin’ house tracks on wax this year.
It’s followed by an “outlandish dub,” which wanders all over the place. The title track leads the B side, a dazzling track with a rolling glissando across the piano keys. The drums reach peak-fucking-dopeness here, on a track that otherwise sounds like speed garage strung out high and peaceably staring at mandala wall tapestries. “Murkin” is the submerged dub of the bundle, low-slung and nasty.
