Outré audio archeology via DJ Curses and Eskimo Recordings shining a “blacklight onto the darker side of club music.” The term “acid” is used more as a broad aesthetic than specifically referencing the 303 here, but the kind of people who like primitive acid tracks likely have some affinity to the kind of leftfield, experimental electronica and demented new wave of the sort showcased on these compilations.
All four tracks on Next Wave Acid Punx Revamps date from the 1980s and many have a connection to Germany’s Westside Music. They’ve been remixed or as they put it “revamped,” with an emphasis on the vamp. The lead track is “(Carmen) Danger In Her Eyes,” a weird artifact of the ’80s featuring trained opera singer turned pop artist Deborah Sasson collaborating with MCL aka Micro Chip League, the German trio best known for the 1987 track “New York” and possibly inspiring the toe-severing nihilists from The Big Lebowski. From the title I had hoped that someone had remixed the ludicrously sincere Christian artist Carmen, but this will do: very new wavey, with orchestra hits where there should be orchestra hits and a buzzy bassline in Curses’ revamp.
“House Fatale” from J.W.B. Hits The Beat is a white knuckle ride through just about every trope of every electronic music curio that hit the charts or MTV in the 1980s. “Houseman” by Voyou is one of the better bits of kitsch on here — Eskimo calls it “late Cold War club music,” which is a frame I’ve never listened to music through but seems like an accurate descriptor, particularly for the neo-Sprockets vibe of a track that tries to insert the word “Germany” at 5 second intervals. “Not Leaving Without Jerry” gets a pretty smooth revamp via Andi. Oddly I think this would be most interesting in the hands of disco and boogie DJs who want to turn up the electricity, mix things up and generate some oddball energy. But I could fuck with this.
