Rissa Garcia was born to do this. The New York City DJ, producer, label owner and all-around househead from Day 2 has lit up dancefloors, as a DJ and now as a producer with releases on labels including Plastik People, Fresh Meat, Pogo House and LW. Many of these have been remixes; the best of her original productions have appeared on her NightChild Records, of particular note was the 2023 Hazy Dreams EP. You don’t really know what’s coming with a Rissa Garcia record, except that the drums will be crisp and springy and it’s going to be useful for any working DJ who has an urgent need to make people sweat out their sorrows.
What people see of you is everything that touched your heart up until today, and Rissa’s music belies an unpaid but for that reason spiritually pure apprenticeship learning the mechanics of house music and the scene around it from some of the architects. Love Is Blind is all of it, thrown into a cauldron and fired until the impurities burn off — three tracks of club-ready house and garage with a Jersey accent.
The title track for Love Is Blind bounces out of the speakers like its mounted on springs — simple but hooky chords that light up like dash-mounted LEDs, backed with razor sharp percussion. The vocal clips are sparse and for that reason effective. Drums, chords, samples, a few filters and effects but by and large that’s all you really need if you know what you’re doing and Rissa does.
