The recent Strictly Rhythm compilation from Cherry Red Records made me remember what an insane hit factory Roger Sanchez was back in the day. For a few years there, by rights of rep if not paper ownership, Strictly was his, the operator at the controls of a machine turning out intensely popular club tracks that never failed in their stated purpose of booty-moving services. And this was largely an era of consoles rather than DAWs, when there was a bit more to it than color-coded waveforms and strangely named project files.
Whether he fell back into the groove or the rest of us caught up with where he has staked out his own patch of territory in the music scene, Roger Sanchez is back to turning out deep and sensual tunes under his S-Man alias. “Wasting Time” is a collaboration with Huxley, but that gigantic, deep and bottomless bass that opens up underneath Aimee Sophia’s vocal is pure, vintage Roger Sanchez.
