Soul came roaring back with R&B savants like TJ Cases bringing a dose of much-appreciated earthiness into the UK Garage mix in the late 1990s. Most of TJ Cases’ records are drenched in it – soul I mean – usually with original vocals, live instruments and boogiewoogie grooves. Cases put a lot of work into his songwriting and it shows, with silky smooth melodies floating above rolling beats. Many of these could have been covered by mainstream artists then or now without belying anything of their UKG origin. Nearly all of Cases’ best material was released on his own Cut & Play Recordings. Tracks like “No One Can Love You More” create a bridge to the soulful sound that was then taking over the East Coast of the States.
