Unsung heroes apparently seem to be a dime a dozen these days, but West Coast dance music veteran Joe Babylon truly fits the bill. Before launching his excellent Roundabout Sounds label in 2010, Joe co-founded the highly respected Plug Research and has been active in all aspects of underground music from producing, DJing and organizing.
Babylon’s latest EP offering, All Caps, picks up on the soulful dusty house vibes he created for his recent album Solitude, which he also released on Roundabout Sounds. (Full disclosure: I have a track on Roundabout Sounds with the always amazing Spirit of the Black 808.) All Caps is a fitting extension for those that might know Babylon’s name but had maybe slipped under the radar for them.
Four great tracks of deep house start off with the opener, “Gawad” with bits of tech mixed with bouncy, shuffling hats and bass. Next is the supremely well crafted and mood oriented floor shaker “Person L” — showing the heights and breadth of Joe’s excellent production prowess.
Side 2 begins with “Wired Ones,” a clicky, filtered Detroit ode that’s perfect for late night drives and dark dance floor rooms. The EP then nicely finishes off with the loopy and infectious rhythms of “Sofie’s Place,” a place that sounds like a great place to wind up at in the early hours of the morning after a long night of dancing and debauchery.
Awesome stuff here as always from Babylon, but to anyone who has been following along, this won’t be a surprise. But hopefully maybe to those just stumbling into Joe’s sonic world and fine label more recently, this great EP will serve as a catalyst to check out Babylon’s excellent back catalog and also to keep an eye out for more great releases from him and his label in the near future.
