Family raising funds for critically ill Chicago icon DJ Funk

Update: The Icon: Remembering DJ Funk.

Update: DJ Funk has passed away. We will be finalizing a memorial to one of Chicago’s heroes this evening.

There’s a lot to process here so we’re just going to give you the facts as we know them:

DJ Funk, one of the pioneers of ghetto house music and a dance music icon, has been “bravely battling stage 4 cancer” but now “doesn’t have much longer left,” in an appeal released by his family. Funk is now “facing the heartbreaking reality of planning for his final farewell.”

The family has issued an urgent appeal via gofundme, which as of right now is funded nearly 3x beyond the $10,000 goal.

The funds will be used to “cover funeral arrangements and give him the tribute he deserves.”

This is shocking news. I’ve used the words here several time already, but DJ Funk is an icon, a legend. Without him, the history of music would have been completely different, and inarguably worse.

We encourage everyone to contribute, as if we can’t do more to help Charles out, we can at least show him how much he meant to us.
