Vocalist and self-described “French West Indies soul singer” Jean Luc Leury, known in the dance music community as Karl The Voice, has passed away, according to friends and collaborators in the house music scene.

In a long career on stage and in the studio, Leury worked on records with producers including Fred Everything, Franck Roger, Marc Cotterell, Playin 4 The City, Bob Sinclar and French rapper and actor Stomy Bugsy.

5 Mag learned of Leury’s passing from producer and DJ Carlos Nilmmns, who said Leury had been ill on and off “but he was always happy and kind. He was a good soul and a super-talented artist. I would spend hours talking to him on the phone about music and life. I’ve been trying to reach him for just over a week because we were releasing multiple records. I’m devastated about this.”

Franck Roger on Facebook wrote that Leury “was a long time friend .. we had to share my first scenes on Paris at Whatsup Bar with Playin 4 The City. We had recorded Love Symphony, etc, etc. a good man with unmatched kindness… It’s a very sad day but your voice will echo like never before where you are.”

One of Leury’s most notable releases as Karl The Voice was on Fred Everything‘s 2003 track “For Your Pleasure.” Fred thanked Leury for “that sweet voice singing ‘For Your Pleasure’… Thank you Karl The Voice aka Karl Leury for everything. Thank you for giving me a piece I still talk about 20 years later. Thank you for all this kindness. Rest well and watch over us.”
