I have such high expectations when I see a new record from Ricardo Paffetti, otherwise known as Black Loops, and he continues to exceed them. Shall Not Fade is releasing a 5 track EP he hammered together out of salvaged electro, acid jazz, deep house and Italo remnants. “Mike The Dog” starts on the acid jazz/electro tip — like if you heard Pat Metheny remixed with some thin, icy synths and drums muffled in a feather box. “Circulation” presses its face against the glass of IDM but never crosses.
The B-Side is my jam. “Banana 20” packs a few decades of Italian electronic music into about 5 minutes, with a squiggle of a bassline working sometimes together and sometimes creating friction with the groove. “Dream2gether” is simply a beautiful piece of music, with the frenetic pace and soulful uplift of classic New York house. “Danse Sur L’Hardcore” ends things on an uptempo note. As always, these are exquisitely produced tracks. They really, really sound good.
There are so many people trying to do what other people are doing and Black Loops is doing Black Loops.
