What I really like about this remix package of Marina Trench’s Imperméable en été EP from last year is that in terms of style, all three remixes are pretty far from each other as well as from the originals, but all three are high quality, showcasing very different approaches to 4/4 electronic dance music.
First up Gerd Janson remixes “Ose” featuring Hugo LX into a big, powerful chugger that comes with one of his patented slightly-Italo arpeggiated bass lines, over which he then layers plenty of pulsating synth work, a combo he’s used before that’ll no doubt comfortably blow up dance floors all over.
Track 2 sees Earl Jeffers take on “L’Orage,” assembling supa-fresh, Afro-tinged rhythms, no standard 909s or disco conga loops here, then adding the simplest two note synth riff and summoning up layers of atmosphere that create a sense of potency: this feels like deep house. Then once he’s set the rhythm up, he drops the softest, fluffiest pad sound of the year so far, laying it on thick, totally committing to the deep house single-chord-pad-euphoria-template and doing it very nicely indeed.
Track 3 is a remix of Trench’s “Hirondelle” from Paris artist Tatyana Jane. The original is a drifty, down-tempo almost-poppy jam, with smooth piano tinkling and slap bass licks. Jane though, holy shit, she takes it somewhere very different indeed, mixing up insectoid synth sounds, some wonderfully off-balance percussion and an overdriven kick into an edgy, futuristic jam. The first half is spooky and twitchy, then she brings in a raw hi hat and goes in hard on her kick, resulting in a tune that’s tough, interesting, moody and completely contemporary.
Overall it’s a really strong remix EP; great work from Trench’s Sweet State label.
