A couple of years ago, Dance System and his record label System-Records launched a music project called the Summer Series that gave wide exposure to a fuckton of artists from around the world. It was just a torrent of releases, precisely timed and sent out as promos pretty much all at once. One of them was from Monaco, a mononymous artist from Ireland whose August 2022 track “Who’s On What?!” managed to sound noisy, primitive and groovy as fuck all at once.
Never forgotten that sound and you can still hear it, slightly housebroken but still ready to bite your fucking head off on Techno Romance, Monaco’s new EP from Hot Haus. “Melodic Reasons” has that icy 8 bit sound that stuck in my head and amidst the synthesized roar and jacking percussion is a groove that’s almost smooth — it gallops at a steady pace and just begs you to drop it into the mix at any point from 1:00 onward. Monaco channels his hyperactivity on the ravey title track and the crazed and dazed “Warehouse Days” to round out a solid EP.
