On Repeat: Harold Heath looks back at some of the best electronic music albums of 2025 in this special series for 5 Mag.
This latest album release from Ron Trent collects together a number of his productions from the last ten years, forming a high-end, pristine, smooth and soothing collection that ebbs and flows between deep house and downtempo electronics, taking the listener to the rave, the journey home, and the chill out/come down afterwards. The tracks range from speedy and percolating, to laid back and introspective, from live, jazzy and free flowing to tightly programmed and synthetic, and everywhere there’s the RT trademark attention to detail, and burnished, intricate production aesthetic, where he generates drive and funk from carefully layered percussion and impeccably placed instrumentation. It’s a familiar-sounding album, almost comforting in how there’s nothing unexpected in the soothing minor chord synth pads, smoking hot conga rhythms, organic semi-live house-jazz jams or chugging, starry-night, reflective downtempo tracks. This lack of experimentation could result in beige-ness for some artists, but not for Ron Trent. The thing is that while these tracks may not be especially groundbreaking, they’re just done so very, very well that what they may lack in experimentation they more than make up for in quality and execution.
