James Pennington is starting a riot over on Detroit Techno Records. Known for his relatively sparse but brilliant output as Suburban Knight, Pennington has backed Mollison Folson and Derrick Lewis’ DTR from its inception with a series of highly regarded EPs and singles, expanding his studded catalog beyond classics like “The Art of Stalking” and “Nocturbulous Behavior.” One 7″ from 2021, “Listening Systems,” was easily one of the best releases of the year.
3 is the first in a series of digital EPs from Suburban Knight (the others will be titled 6 and 9, allegedly) and finds Pennington still poised on the axis where house, techno and electro draw into magnetic attraction and opposition to one another. “His Horns” raises the heat slowly until it’s boiling. The murky “All Night” is another slow, humid, chugging track — a big lumbering beast setting off small detonations with a swipe of its tail. “Bodys remix” is a thumping take on “All Night” — reaching the highest peak of energy of the three tracks and, for purely dancefloor purposes, the most versatile track on the EP.
This was released the weekend of Movement 2024 and my Bandcamp alerts were absolutely fried from the flood of records. But no Suburban Knight record burns out after a month, a year or a decade. High caloric electronic nutrition from one of Detroit’s best artist/label partnerships.
