T. Mixwell: Grit Grime

“Grit Grime” and that says it all. Chicago’s T. Mixwell’s EP (really a single and a remix) on Sugar Shack Recordings is streetwise and whip-smart, operating somewhere way down in the BPMs and in the booty region. By turns an electro novelty or a beat track with twitchy percussion or a breakdancing loop for bboys and bgirls, there’s also a trace of conscious nerdiness to it — like I’m seeing Lewis & Gilbert on computers and keytars off to the sideline in hazmat suits, barely keeping up and waiting to jump in.

The “nasty” remix drags the tempo ahead – traditional 4/4 with handclaps and the robotic vocal clip teased into something that sounds almost sleek. It’s probably my pick and the winner among DJs but you can’t overlook the main mix for the quirky originality of it.
