More house excellentness on Delusions of Grandeur, this time featuring four cuts from Athenian DJ/producer Lex. The title track of Without You has this really simple, effective, driving b-line that suggests it’s going to go big but it never really does. Instead it just stays in a kind of constant, lush, shimmering, disco-fied present moment, punctuated by twinkling keys, synth noodling and FX zaps.
“Strip Town” matches big drifty pad chords and a Bernard Edwards-esque b-line with crisp, restrained percussion to great effect, while “Purity,” featuring spoken word vocals from Brazilian producer/DJ Guto Ferdandez, is a collaboration with producer Locke, and is a deep disco thing made of subdued strings, layers and layers of delicious percussion and a very nice sense of tension to it.
Final track “No Time For Formalities” with Dennis Liber has an old-school Chi-house piano line and a generally retro-feel. It’s perfectly well accomplished but to my ears it’s overshadowed by the freshness of the first three tracks although I can see my mate Matt playing the hell out of this one. The Without You EP is another strong alternative dance floor package from D.o.G.
