Session Victim return with a three-tracker on Delusions Of Grandeur which includes a part-UKG/part-dreamy-ambient track, “Light The Way” which also comes with a chunky breakbeat Iron Curtis Illuminati mix that unfolds in a very pleasing way. Both of them are nice but it’s all about the lead track for me. “Screen Off” is one of those tunes with a one-bar loop at its heart so strong that it just effortlessly carries the whole thing. Built from an irresistibly rubbery bass line and a couple of tiny guitar samples, it’s just a pure roller, broken up with neat little drum fills, the kind of tune you drop and it feels like you’ve pitched up the tempo but you haven’t.
Session Victim enlisted Jamaican poet and vocalist Ras Stimulant for spoken word duties and he drops some nice low key lyrics musing on the subject of, apparently, contemporary screen-use, his voice working for me as just another part of the mix, another timbre to push the groove along. Urgent, funky, driving, and I suspect, a floor filler.
