So if you’ve not heard it, Rolando’s “Junie,” which originally came out in 2011 on his 5 to 9 EP, is mystical, haunting, spaced-out half-time techno, a quietly mystical and beautiful record much loved by his fans. It’s not really a dancefloor jam, so commissioning a set of dancefloor remixes was quite a bold move, but luckily nothing in this remix package does a poor job.
Cinthie keeps the mood strictly Detroit with a remix made from her signature no nonsense, straight up house beats and a set of motor city stabs. Cassy’s remix meanwhile is a more murky, grainy, loopy and hypnotic affair that moves forward via subtle micro alterations, additions and subtractions.
For me, Carlos Nilmmns’ True People remix is the star of the show here, as multiple layers of intricate funky congas and assorted percussion somehow perfectly lock in with a nimble sub-ish bassline to create an absolute beast of groove, which is then decorated with lingering pad chords and echoey female vocal samples. Soulful and driving at the same, it reworks the source material into a groove that’s both familiar and new.
