I’ve been doing my 5 Mag radio shows and podcasts for over 10 years, and my setup had always been a Shure microphone plugged into my mixer, which was then routed into my iMac. It sounded great and I never had a problem with it, except for the fact that my screeching voice required me to edit the sound levels for hours on end.
When people spoke of podcast mics, I scoffed. Because I’m an avid listener of podcasts, I often found the sound quality of many to be less than desirable. But one day on a whim I purchased the Meteor Mic as a gift for the bf and decided to try it out myself.
First, to the superficial pluses… The Meteor Mic is a damn good-looking podcasting microphone. The Meteor Mic comes in either silver or black, but if you fancy the retro look you’ll love the sleek silver one. It comes with its own velvet pouch, it’s extremely light and portable, and to set it up you simply unfold its 3 legs to make a convenient tripod.
The setup was easy: simply plug it into the USB port of your Mac, launch whichever recording software you’re using and you’re ready to go. (I use Audio Hijack and sometimes Garage Band.) At the back of the mic is the USB port and the headphone jack. At the front of the mic is the On/Mute button, and next to that is the volume control (which is to monitor the incoming sound when you have your headphones plugged into the mic.)
I loved the sound quality. It was much less sensitive than my studio microphone, which tended to pick up every single “p” and “t” I spit out. It’s unidirectional, which makes it ideal for someone recording themselves. This is definitely perfect for you to carry around in your bag for an impromptu podcast. The only con to this cutie pie is that if you set it down on a table, be careful not to be banging or moving stuff around the table while recording as Meteor Mic will pick those sounds up too.
Overall I love the Meteor Mic. He comes via Amazon at a low price of $62.80. This is a great budget podcast microphone and always makes the lists of top podcasting mics.
