There is a raw-as-fuck aesthetic to this EP that places it in the oil-stained concrete sarcophagus of the Midwest and also my heart. So surprises all around when I found out Annika Wolfe (which is maybe the coolest name for a musician since Howlin’ Wolf) is from the West Coast rather than the Third.

Chiques Funk will drop an anchor on the map for wherever Annika is, with three tracks of incredibly raw and blistering techno tracks. “Drama” has the architecture of classic DJ Funk, with gated reverb 808-style beats that hit hard and drop out almost as soon as they do. You can’t doubt the bounce on “Flavor” either. Annika drops in samples just right — they hit, you don’t really hear them and then they loop about 15,000 times until you can’t hear anything else. A small work of genius, its.
