Because collects four of Rausch’s tracks, dripping with soul and lush sounds. “Never Meant To Be” is the lead track and the finest: music that infiltrates your mind, your biological systems and eventually your sleep. A wild vocal in a thicket of loud, florid chords, with unusual breaks and an overall eclectic arrangement that few people can really pull off but Rausch does it well.
“About Love” is another mood maker — laid back, lo-fi, animated by voices and chords drifting in and out of the room, rising up and fading out again.
“How We Do It” is a pure, adulterated hit of Nu Groove. I mean real Nu Groove, Nu Groove from back in the day when there was a truck that backed up at a studio in some non-descript Jersey warehouse district every morning and drove off with crates of new records that would blow up your system after midnight.
Rausch does 4am really well — that last pump of energy, that last song or the first last song before you give up whatever plans you had for a responsible life and an early morning because you’re going to remember what happens here with much more tenderness than you remember waking up on time and having a sensible breakfast.
