Four tracks of tracky, loopy, quietly potent deep house tracks from Chicago-raised Daniel Chavez, following his very respectable debut on Halo’s Muted Noise last year. This is one of those EPs where the tracks are all kind of different but all kind of the same. The overall mood is that deep house balance we all love: a bit dreamy, fluffy and twinkling, a little bit tripped out and surreal — but also propulsive, focused, and possessed of a drive that can send a dance floor wild, despite essentially repeating the same kick, snare and hat/bass, keys and pad trick that we’ve all heard countless times before.
A2 “Terras” is probably the most minimal of the pack, made of raw 909 beats and a clattering snare pattern while a gently swirling single-note chord/drone keeps things warm in the background. B2 “Spiralling” keeps it pretty sparse too, made up of a simple bass and keys combo matched with razor-sharp claps and skippy garage-house beats. A1 “Writing On Water” is an intense, rich, full deep houser with meaty percussion and a slick jazzy side stick rhythm on top, distorted pitched-down vocal whispers and the kind of groove that people like me describe as “driving”: it doesn’t skip, it doesn’t bang, roll or even groove, it drives along, motorised, efficient, moving steadily.
B2 “67th Session” is a little speedier with another set of welcoming pads, together with lighter, shuffling drum and the slight sense that it was recorded in space. Excellent deep house EP.
