For me, it’s a rarity to come across a dance music single where the original mix actually outshines the remixes! But, when you’ve got Marshall Jefferson on production and Robert Owens on vocals, what else can you expect?! Of course, this is just my opinion (and born & raised in the birthplace of House Music, I’m entitled to it!) But take a listen for yourself to “How Can I”, the sophomore single from Gareth Whitehead’s forthcoming debut album. Start with Marshall’s original mix, turn up your headphones, and see if you don’t put this mix on repeat!! And what you’ll hear/experience is the original recipe of what created House Music…
To be fair (and a lil’ unbiased), let’s talk about the included remixes: a mainstay of the UK House scene, Luke Solomon shows off his “raw feel” talents on a pair of vocal and stripped down instrumental mixes, the latter of which I can alternatively get into. To paint a vivid picture, imagine a studio collabo with Detroit legend Derrick May and Chicago legend Armando Gallop (R.I.P.), and this could quite possibly be the outcome… Bringing it back to the U.S of A., NYC pioneer Lenny Dee teams up with production partner Mel Harris for their New End mix, a club & radio-friendly melody (under five minutes) built around Owen’s original vocals.
All in all, this one’s a winner for Gareth Whitehead and BulletDodge Records.
