I love that these guys did this. After several years in limbo, the lads are back with Slum Science album of unfashionably downtempo, trippy and funky tunes. This sound isn’t particularly hip at the moment but it’s always a crowdpleaser (and at a time when Deep House is being perverted into a fashion accessory rather than a vital movement, a return to a more streetwise sound is maybe a necessary correction).
It takes a while for these songs to pull themselves together before they steamroll you, but there are hooks galore. This style really seems more about attitude and presence than anything else. And I hate to call tracks like “Good Feeling” a throwback – it still sounds street lethal to me and, more to the point, fun. There are only seven tracks on the album, but all are DJ-friendly in length.
