In the Realms of the Unreal is a title shared and inspired by the magnum opus of outsider artist Henry Darger, who supported himself as a custodian in a Chicago hospital while writing his 15,145 page tome. Most of the titles on Tape Hiss’ EP draw upon Darger’s The Story of the Vivian Girls, in What is Known as the Realms of the Unreal, of the Glandeco-Angelinian War Storm, Caused by the Child Slave Rebellion. “Angelinian War Storm” is smooth, emotionally wrought techno, exquisitely crafted and soaring, as befits anything that evokes Darger. “Vivian Girls” features soft, muted basslines and floating synths, with a wicked jazz & hip hop inspired remix from Patrice Scott. The title track breaks free of the restraint with a low acid hum and indecipherable voices bouncing up against the sides and threatening to break out.
