Flite is a new creation tool — a multi-sampler and synth workstation from an equally new company called Wavea. Wavea itself was co-founded by Sharooz Raoofi, who you might know by his records under his first name mononym or as Principleasure. That makes Wavea the latest in a number of new music gear and software houses founded by well-known musicians in the underground — a trend that is both growing and exceedingly welcome (Raoofi has been down this road before with Audiaire, which was acquired three years ago by Splice).

Flite is a fascinating product. It’s an uncommonly powerful creation tool similar in scope to Native Instruments Kontakt 8. One major difference: it’s free in its most basic mode, and $99 in its full access “Create” mode, which is less than half of what Native Instruments Kontakt costs (and this does not factor in the savings from no longer having to deal with Native Instruments).

Flite works on practically any hardware you have on hand, all the way back to Windows 10 and macOS High Sierra (and the installation, as mentioned, is free). It comes with 2.5 gb of samples from a crazy variety of vintage synths and drum machines, presumably lifted from Raoofi’s hard drive, to get you started. There’s a synth layer with FM, virtual analog and wavetable synthesis, four multi-samplers, with individual sound & group controls, 2 thirty-two step sequencers with modulation, note pitch, rate and gate, dual 12/24dB HP/BP/LP filters, 3 LFOs with key trigger, delay and rate, 3 assignable envelopes, multi FX including granular reverb by Sinevibes, chorus, delay and more, 8 custom macros to create unique instruments from scratch and 5 three band EQs. There are also 200 patches from Raoofi as well.

Flite is an incredible tool that offers a great deal of flexibility and power for a price ranging from free to $99. If you really get into this, you’re going to pay the full price. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.
