Artists using Patreon are due for sticker shock as Apple is forcing the site to comply with its 30% App Store fee coming in November.
The App Store fees and requirements — subject to litigation from Epic Games — will also force Patreon to end several popular billing methods, including charging subscribers per-creation and so-called “first-of-the-month” billing.
In a long post, Patreon outlined Apple’s requirements and an impending November 2024 deadline for meeting them. All new memberships and any purchases will be subject to a 30% App Store fee, and Apple will no longer support per-creation and first-of-the-month billing cycles in favor of a monthly subscription payment.
The App Store fee only applies to new members who subscribe via the Patreon iOS app.
Patreon is implementing an “optional tool” which will account for the App Store fee in new subscription prices — essentially passing on the cost to new subscribers rather than the artist or Patreon itself. Patreon says the tool will be implemented by default but can be disabled.

Per-creation and first-of-the-month billing will no longer be available in the iOS app in November. In the past, creators were able to charge their supporters only when they produced something — for instance, per video or per comic. That form of subscription will no longer be available on the Patreon iOS app come November.
And while restrictions on per-creation and first-of-the-month billing are also being imposed by Apple’s App Store policies, Patreon has announced they plan to phase this out site-wide by November 2025 for all types of billing:
Note this is November 2025 for the site-wide elimination of per-creation and first-of-the-month billing, but they will end for iOS users in November 2024.
