Hi! Energy Records is at their best when they’re cranking out these sugary confections – marvelous ’90s-style tracks like those on Garage Connection that blend the best of Deep House with the best of UK Garage into one potent headrush. Lombard Street’s “Only You Babe” could have been the soundtrack for Frankie’s nights at Sound Factory Bar – that slinky, sexy, funky house that heralded Manhattan’s prominence as a clubland mecca. The Callvin Remix drapes this in the colors and vibes of UKG with a spiny shuffling beat and half-cocked funky trumpet.
On the flip is Melodymann‘s “A Woman,” a breathlessly jacked up track where soul with strings meets Grant Nelson. Soledrifter’s “Let Me Sing” is the secret gem here, though, a stripped down funky jam that could have been hiding in Cajmere’s closet all these years.
