Jamie Lidell’s 3 4 U (“Three For You”) was one of the sleeper hits of this past summer of no summer. The British vocalist now based in Nashville brings it back on a canvas of luscious stabs and fat bass on “Sandpaper,” the title track from a new EP with Lorenz Rhode on Dirt Crew.
This has everything you love about soul music — quality writing and arrangement, powerful delivery and a groove nasty enough to strip paint off the walls. Close your eyes and you can hear The Reverend Al Green having a real moment and jamming with the kids down in his basement. It’s that kinda energy.
There’s a remix from Lars from Detroit Swindle (now Dam Swindle) and Lorenz under the guise of “Sound Support,” and an instrumental though God knows why you’d want to go and do something like that. When people want to know where the soul has gone, look at them funny and play them this.
