Danny Krivit Celebrates 45 Years of DJing with 45s

"Funkanova"/"Sex" is the latest 7" of disco edits from Mr K. on Most Excellent Unlimited.

Everybody pays when a bad edit goes viral. Feed your soul on these instead. In his 45 years of DJing, Danny Krivit has seen everything come and go, and now he’s come around again himself as the New York legend is experiencing a refined renaissance right now, both in popular acclaim and in productivity.

To celebrate those 45 years, 2016 has seen a series of 7″ edits (played at 45 RPM, get it?) under the Mr K Edits moniker, scattered around this summer’s mindblowing 25 track Mr. K T.K. Records compilation released in Japan.

This time Danny rubs down “Funkanova,” the 1976 release from Wood, Brass & Steel and one of the touchstone tracks of dance music. Every generation seems to reach inside and find something in those lush horns and keys that speaks to a new era. Danny strips it down, playing with that fancy fretwork forever before punching it back up with rich, sonorous, soulful brass.

The flipside features Mr. K’s edit of “Sex,” the track by Boobie Knight & The Universal Lady that was just as heavily sampled as “Funkanova,” but mostly in the early Hip-Hop world (See “She’s Fresh” from Grandmaster Flash & the Furious Five’s legendary The Message LP). Boobie had a ton of crazy tracks like this that lent themselves so well to recycling (“Juicy Fruit” was another). Krivit’s edit snags the horns and loops them into something akin to frenzy.
