Nachtbraker‘s four-track Capichone EP for Shanti Celeste and Gramrcy’s Peach Discs pretty much exemplifies his distinct production approach: his tunes are often a subtle hybrid of elements of deep house and classic Detroit techno with echoes of ’90s Dutch house, all filtered through a highly detailed sound design process. So it is here with four tracks of futurist hybrid 4/4.
A1 “Capichone” is a high-speed, bouncy jam, its heavily reverbed flutey-key riff giving it quite a ’90s house feel. It’s the lead track but is my least favourite, its cheery mood and abstract sound palette combination just not quite doing it for me. A2 “Etherflem” works much better however, utilising a similar mid-’90s Dutch house bounce but making the sleek synth work a little more tense, resulting in a shiny, driving, nicely-moody tech jam. B2 “Inbellen” is a slightly lolloping, itchy, insecty techno track which turns stately and austere once the chords drop. The key with this EP is that it sounds as though every individual element was sculpted to order, as though there were no sample packs or pre-sets in the process, as well as no “classic” sounds either, which gives the whole thing a distinctly fresh sonic flavour.
Final track “Treunq1” is a floaty electro breaks jam full of Nachtbraker’s intricate programming, its detailed little synthetic riffs dropping in and out of the sound field somehow creating a pensive, expectant mood. Overall it’s all good stuff, fresh, interesting and full of potential.
