Hands Up! Cinthie returns to 803 Crystal Grooves with four tracks of gorgeous deep house

Cinthie returns to her boutique 803 Crystal Grooves label for four tracks of exceptional deep house. Rarely do you get a 12″ with tracks you all play in one set without sounding samey or repetitive — they all float in the same vaguely deep house universe but present different shapes and sounds within it.

“Grooves” is built around a sampled grunt that sounds pitched up and down and manipulated until it mumbles out a melody, dodging disco hits and basement jam percussion. Imaginative arrangement on this. It leads into a deep and dubby cut called “Boxer,” which has the virtue of being flexible enough that you can mix in at the start like a normal person or totally perv out and mix in at 5:20, when everything drops out except that little squiggle of a riff.

Flip it over for the best track of the EP. “Hands Up” is the title and it says it all — claps, leads, a patchwork of samples before a pair of chords take over. Bright, pumpin’ peak time house music. “She Wants It” sounds like the lost “club mix” from a 1987 London Records pop hit — swirling synths that pop like stars and hang on a fragment of a soulful vocal hit. Nothing but class all across this.
